At this restored Finca, an escape-it-all retreat with origins in the 13th century, high up in the Tramuntana mountains, it is not just the olive oil that is organic. Dining is a big part of the experience - the summer season cook can prepare a variety of dishes using produce almost entirely from the estate - lamb, goats, pigs, chickens; a kitchen garden, fruit trees - at Pedruxella life is lived in rhythm with the seasons.
Pedruxella is definitely not Four Seasons-style manicured accommodation - that would be to miss the point. There may be the odd cracked tile in the 17th century mosaic tiling for example; there's likely to be a creaky floorboard or two and a visit from local wildlife (all harmless) is a distinct possibility. The American owners of Pedruxella have done a wonderful job in bringing back to life one of the original 'Posesiones' or great estates on the island, producing a first-class retreat for guests to escape the stress of modern life and discover an alternative side to the island.
The air is pure, and the views across the Tramuntana, uplifting; the food is organic and abundant. Beds have deep, comfortable mattresses and high-thread count linens; bathrooms are new, bedrooms are air-conditioned, and although mobile phone usage can be intermittent (some may consider this one of the attractions), the WiFi is full strength.
Main House
On the ground floor your will find a country kitchen with central island with gas and electric, the entrance hall with a wood-burner, leading to the inner courtyard with bodega, stables and olive press. A formal dining room, and drawing room with fireplace.
The first floor is home to all 6 bedrooms; bedroom 1 with a double bed, en suite bathroom and air-conditioning, bedroom 2 with twin beds, en suite bathroom and air-conditioning, bedroom 3 with king bed and en suite bathroom, bedroom 4 with double bed and air-conditioning, bedroom 5 with double bed, sharing a bathroom with bedroom 6 which has a single bed.
The cosy library with office area, leads onto the sunny terrace and there is also a large vibrant children's playroom with two-four children's beds
Outside Area
Over 250 hectares of land surround the estate, made up largely of olive orchard, Carob trees and Mediterranean Oak. Pathways and hiking routes criss-cross the terraced grounds, where goats and sheep pasture, and 700 years of history dot the landscape. A Moorish Tower, a stone aqueduct, and here and there lime kilns, for burning rocks, used to produce the calcium for whitewashing houses; the centuries are laid bare.
This reconnection with History, and Nature, and contemplating one's place amongst them, is at the heart of the Pedruxella experience. Whether it's swimming in the pool, breathing in the mountain air each morning, family dinners set out on the cobbled courtyard, assisting and learning on the farm, or feasting on the estate's produce - there is purity and an unavoidable revaluation of priorities here. Just like the tafona, which eschews the immediate and the short cut, Pedruxella enshrines a philosophy: that luxury is about authenticity, values and time.
Every November, following the harvest, farm hands, household staff, guests and locals, gather around the 200 year old olive press at the centre of the Pedruxella estate, the sole remaining traditional press on Mallorca, for the annual 'Tafona' or olive pressing. The tafona is the starting pistol for the fiestas which accompany the event, with celebrations running long into the night. But for the team at Pedruxella, the pressing also marks the culmination of thousands of back-breaking hours tending to 150 hectares of olive orchards that cover the estate.
