Santorini is a small, circular group of volcanic islands located in southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km south-east from Greece's mainland. It is also known as Thera and is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km² (28 mi²). Santorini is essentially what has been left from an enormous volcanic explosion which destroyed the settlements thereon and led to the creation of the current geological caldera. Its spectacular natural beauty with warm black beaches, stunning scenery and an easy-going vibe. In glorious sunshine, the island's brilliant for relaxing and mixes a traditional Greek flavour with a volcanic nightlife to make the island one of Europe's top tourist hotspots.
The island of Santorini is rather amazing and particular at first sight. Its white villages perched on the cliff top allow extraordinary views of the prominent Caldera and endless blue of the Aegean sea. Its magical vibe, romantic atmosphere and diverse colours make it a special place in everyone’s dream. Almost every house touches one another and can be reached by small walkways. The architecture remains common, the traditional homes of Santorini are usually small, carved into the volcanic rock; however, the style of each house is different, some simpler, others more sophisticated and glamorous.
Santorini has several towns and villages; "Oia" the old traditional town is situated on the north side of the island; whereas the town of "Imerovigli" and the capital "Fira" are on the west coast overlooking the volcano. Visitors walk or ride donkeys up the steep winding path to the towns, which are equipped with good restaurants, bars and plenty of nightlife to keep tourists happy while they relax between visiting the archaeological remains of ancient Thera, dating back to the 9th century BC, on the east side of the island. Other attractions include the excavations at Akrotiri, an archaeological museum and an 18th-century monastery. Santorini has two swimming beaches, Perissa and Kamari, both characterised by their volcanic black sand.
Not only is Santorini one of the most beautiful islands in the world, it is also geologically and archaeologically one of the most dramatic with world-famous sunsets. Santorini can be reached by sea, with modern fast ferries from Pireus and other major Islands. The International Airport handles many direct flights from all major European cities and daily domestic flights from Athens.
