Mas de Pennafort

Provence, France

Mas de Pennafort Information

Constructed all on one floor in the classical 'orangery' style, the recently completed Mas has been finished to the highest standards. Despite being a modern construction the house is sensitively presented and includes a variety of traditional features such as limestone floors, tall airy ceilings, decorative cornices and French doors leading to terraces.

Heavy iron gates at the entrance date from 1805, with a hand-made decorative archway constructed using the art of pargetting. The drawing room features an 18th century George II fire-surround, whilst a magnificent mural runs throughout the Hall, hand painted en grisaille (in shades of soft greys and taupe). Bedrooms are all well-sized (each at least 23 sqm or larger), and beds come with memory foam mattresses.

A kitchen and breakfast room has granite worktops, appliances by Miele and Gaggenau, including two family-sized refrigerators, freezer with cube, clump and shaved ice, a wine safe, two dishwashers, two two-burner gas hobs and two two-burner electric hobs, two ovens and Insinkerator and a Quooker 'hot top'. The kitchen opens onto a shaded breakfast terrace with views onto the gardens and nearby village.

Outdoors, the heated swimming pool is flanked with a fully-equipped summer house, ideal for long lunches pool-side, as well as providing shade for cooling off, a game of Wii or a movie with DVD.

Grounds extend to half a hectare, feature 60 ancient olive trees and a small orchard with cherry, fig, plums, apples and damson, lemon trees, orange and bergamot. Closer to the house a classical knot garden is formed with geometric beds, book-ended with white roses weaving through olive trees.

Location

Whilst the towns of St Tropez, Cannes and Aix-en-Provence headline the region, it is the surrounding villages and market towns nestled amongst the vineyards that really capture the spirit of Provence.

Less than an hour from the shores of the Cote d'Azur, in the scenic Var region, the ochre-coloured Pennafort gorges dissect a landscape of oak forest like a small scale version of the Grand Canyon.

To the north of the gorges, as the oak-forests thin out and vines regain control, medieval villages and market towns cap the undulating foot hills. Here within strolling distance of one such village, is the Mas de Pennafort.

Within easy reach is St Tropez, Cannes and the Riviera, and the spectacular beauty of the Gorges de Verdun. Several extremely high quality restaurants are located close by, as well as an excellent bakery, wine shop and casual restaurants in the local village. The market town of Draguignan, once the capital of Provence, is less than 20 minutes away.
